Ear infections (otitis externa) are especially common in drop-eared breeds (Cocker, Basset, Golden). Without proper treatment they can progress to the middle or inner ear and cause balance issues.
Signs
- Frequent ear scratching and head shaking
- Redness, swelling, crusts
- Dark brown or yellow-green discharge
- Bad odour
- Pain and sensitivity to touch
- Reduced hearing
- Head tilt to one side
Common causes
- Bacterial or fungal infection
- Ear mites (Otodectes): common in puppies
- Foreign body: grass seed, fur
- Allergy: food or environmental
- Swimming: water trapped in the ear
- Excess hair: poor ventilation of the ear canal
Treatment process
At the clinic we start with an otoscopic exam. We check ear canal depth and evaluate the eardrum. A sample of the discharge is examined under the microscope (to differentiate bacteria/yeast/mites). Treatment includes professional cleaning, drops and sometimes systemic antibiotics.
Home ear care
- Clean every 2-4 weeks with a vet-approved cleanser
- Dry ears after bathing
- Drying after swimming is critical
- Trim ear hair in long-haired breeds
- Do not use cotton swabs — they push debris in and cause damage
