Feline Urinary Tract Disease: Signs, Risks and Treatment

Is your cat visiting the litter box often but producing little urine? Bloody or painful urination may signal urinary disease. It is life-threatening in male cats.

Cat at the vet

Feline urinary diseases are grouped under FLUTD and are common. Male cats are at risk of obstruction; inability to urinate can be fatal within 24 hours. Early diagnosis and treatment save lives.

Signs to watch for

  • Frequent trips to the litter box with little or no urine
  • Bloody urine
  • Vocalising and restlessness while urinating
  • Urinating outside the litter box (associated with pain)
  • Excessive licking of the genital area
  • Loss of appetite, lethargy
  • Swollen, tender abdomen

Emergency — in male cats

Urinary obstruction in male cats is an emergency. The urethra narrows and crystals or mucus plugs form. The bladder is damaged within 24 hours and kidney failure or cardiac arrest can develop. With early intervention our success rate exceeds 95%.

Diagnosis and treatment

At our clinic we diagnose with urinalysis, X-ray and, when needed, ultrasound. Treatment includes antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, fluid therapy, a specialised diet and, in some cases, catheterisation. Advanced obstruction may require surgery (perineal urethrostomy).

Preventing recurrence

  • Plenty of fresh water (dilutes urine)
  • FLUTD-preventive prescription diet
  • Stress reduction (environmental enrichment)
  • Urine check-ups 1-2 times a year
  • Enough litter boxes (number of cats + 1)
