The pet passport is an official document approved by the Türkiye Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, required for international pet travel. It contains the pet's identity, vaccination records, microchip number and health information.
Step-by-step process
- Microchip implantation — an ISO-compliant chip is placed under the skin between the shoulder blades.
- Rabies vaccination — given if there is no valid vaccine. The rabies vaccine must be given after the microchip.
- 21-day wait — the time needed for the rabies vaccine to build immunity.
- Health declaration — completed by an official veterinarian.
- Passport issuance — printed with Ministry of Agriculture approval.
- Pre-flight examination (10 days before departure) — additional documents based on the destination.
Special requirements for the EU
For entry to the EU, Türkiye has the status of an "unlisted third country". Therefore:
- Microchip + rabies vaccine are mandatory
- Rabies titre test (FAVN) — blood is drawn 30 days after vaccination and sent to an EU-approved laboratory (results in 30-60 days)
- Titre must be ≥ 0.5 IU/ml
- After the test, a 3-month waiting period applies before entering the EU
- EU-compliant health certificate from the Ministry of Agriculture
So you need to start planning at least 4 months ahead for EU travel.

- UK, Ireland, Finland, Malta: tick and echinococcus treatment (24-120 hours before flight)
- USA: microchip + rabies vaccine + health certificate
- Japan: the strictest rules — 180-day wait, two titre tests
- Australia: 180-day wait + Brucella and Ehrlichia testing
Air-travel tips
- Plan your pet's flight at least 4 months in advance
- Use an IATA-approved carrier from your airline
- Check the rules for cabin vs. cargo hold (usually under 8 kg for cabin)
- For stress, never give sedatives — they can create life-threatening risks during flight
