Causes of vomiting
- Hairball: common in long-haired cats, 1-2 per week is normal
- Food allergy or fast eating: instantly regurgitated food
- Parasites: roundworm, tapeworm

- Kidney or liver failure (in senior cats)
- Foreign body ingestion (string, rubber bands)
- Poisoning: plants, human foods, medication
When is it an emergency?
- 3+ episodes of vomiting within 24 hours
- Blood or brown sediment in the vomit
- Lethargy, loss of appetite + vomiting
- Signs of dehydration (dry gums)
- Abdominal swelling, pain
- Suspected foreign body ingestion
- Any vomiting in kittens
What can you do at home?
- Fast for 6-12 hours (water available)
- Then small portions of warm rice-and-chicken or a prescription GI diet
- Use a malt paste for hairballs
- Never give human medication
