FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) and FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) are viruses that collapse a cat's immune system and shorten life. Testing every newly adopted cat — especially those from the street — is essential.
Why testing?
- Early diagnosis extends lifespan
- Prevents spread to other cats
- Allows creation of a treatment and support plan
- Affects vaccine decisions (FeLV vaccine is given to FeLV-negative cats)
Who must be tested?
- All newly adopted cats
- Street-origin cats
- Unexplained weight loss or lethargy
- Cats with recurrent gum disease
- Before introducing a new cat to the household
- Before breeding
The testing process
A single drop of blood gives a combo test result in 10 minutes. If positive, a confirmatory PCR is recommended. In kittens, maternal immunity can cause false positives; retest at 6 months.
If the test is positive
FIV-positive cats can live for many years with proper care. FeLV tends to progress faster. For positive cats we recommend regular check-ups, stress management, high-quality diet and indoor-only, single-cat living.
