Cats become senior after 7 and "geriatric" after 12. In this period chronic kidney disease, thyroid disease and diabetes are common — but with early diagnosis a long, high-quality life is still possible.
Changes to watch for
- Increased water intake (kidney/diabetes)
- Weight loss (hyperthyroidism)
- Litter box changes
- Excessive vocalising (confusion)
- Reduced coat quality
- Less activity and play
Twice-yearly check-ups
Senior cats should be checked every 6 months. Each visit includes blood work, urinalysis and blood pressure measurement for kidney, thyroid and diabetes screening. About 30% of senior cats have chronic kidney disease.
Adjusting nutrition
A senior cat diet or a vet-recommended prescription diet (kidney, thyroid) is used. High-moisture food (wet) is important for kidney health. Keep fresh water at multiple spots. Some cats benefit from a pet water fountain.
Comfort and quality of life
- Low-sided litter box (for joint comfort)
- A warm, cosy corner
- Lower climbing heights
- More frequent nail trimming
- Gentle brushing for coat care
